US, Syrian approaches to airstrikes 'juxtaposed'
Lt. Gen. Mark Hertling (retired), told CNN's Wolf Blitzer that there was a big difference between the US strikes and Syrian attacks on "civilian populations":
"(We have seen) 59 Tomahawk missiles targeting facilities, targeting hardened shelters, not targeting people -- in fact giving warnings to both Syrian and Russian governments, either informally or in a nuanced way," Hertling, former US Army Commanding General of US Army Europe and the Seventh Army said.
"Juxtapose that with what has been happening with not only the Syrian military dropping barrel bombs on civilian populations but also the support they have received from the Russian military in doing the same thing -- that is, arbitrary killing of anybody who happens to be in the battle space.
"It goes to that way of war, (compared to) the American way of war which is to try and denigrate the capabilities of the enemy force versus just targeting enemy civilians. I think that is an important point."
